What Happens When You Join?
Every transition is different, so your experience with TailoredVets won't follow a rigid checklist. But there is a process designed to understand where you are, build the right plan, and connect you with the right support.
Step 1: Tell Us About Yourself
Start by completing our TailoredVets interest form.
We'll ask about your military experience, transition timeline, career interests, location, and where you are in your transition today. Don't worry if you can't answer every career question yet. Many veterans come to us specifically because they're still figuring out what they want to do next.
The goal isn't to evaluate whether you have everything figured out. It's to give us enough information to make our first conversation useful.
What you should have ready: Your anticipated transition date, a general idea of your career interests if you have one, and your current resume or LinkedIn profile if available.
Step 2: Meet With TailoredVets
After we receive your information, we'll schedule an initial conversation.
This isn't a job interview. We'll talk about your military experience, what you've done so far to prepare, the types of careers or industries you're considering, where you plan to live, what's important to you in your next career, and where you're running into challenges.
We'll also talk openly about expectations, the civilian job market, and whether the direction you're considering aligns with your experience and goals.
Sometimes that means confirming you're headed in the right direction. Sometimes it means challenging the plan and exploring a different one.
That's part of the process.
Step 3: Build Your Transition Plan
Once we understand where you are, we'll identify what needs attention first.
Depending on your transition, that could include:
- Career exploration and identifying realistic target roles
- Translating your military experience into civilian language
- Resume development and tailoring
- LinkedIn profile development
- Building a target company list
- Networking strategy and outreach
- Job-search strategy
- Interview preparation
- Compensation and offer evaluation
- Introductions within our network when appropriate
You won't necessarily need all of these at once.
The goal is to build a focused plan around your transition instead of handing you a generic checklist.
Step 4: Do the Work Together
TailoredVets is hands-on, but we won't run your transition for you.
We'll review materials, provide feedback, practice interviews, talk through opportunities, help you develop networking strategies, challenge assumptions, make introductions when appropriate, and help you adjust when something isn't working.
You'll be expected to take action between conversations. That might mean revising your resume with guidance from TailoredVets, reaching out to people in your target industry, researching companies, applying to roles, practicing your story, or following through on an introduction.
We bring the coaching, experience, network, and accountability.
You bring the effort.
Step 5: Navigate the Job Search
Once you're actively pursuing opportunities, the relationship doesn't stop. Bring the real situations you're dealing with to us.
Not getting interviews? We'll look at why.
Getting interviews but not offers? We'll work through what's happening.
Unsure whether a position is actually a good opportunity? Let's talk about it.
Have an interview next week? Let's prepare.
Received an offer and aren't sure about the compensation, company, or role? We'll help you think through it.
The goal isn't simply to apply to more jobs. It's to help you make better decisions throughout the search.
Step 6: Start Your Civilian Career
Landing the job is a major milestone.
It isn't the end of TailoredVets.
The first civilian role can bring an entirely new set of questions. Workplace culture, communication, leadership, expectations, career progression, compensation, navigating your organization, and figuring out what comes next can all look different outside the military.
That's where the mentorship side of TailoredVets becomes even more important.
Step 7: Keep the Relationship
Our structured support is designed to continue through your transition and into the first five years of your civilian career.
And mentorship doesn't need to end there.
Careers change. Promotions happen. Companies change. Opportunities appear. Sometimes the first civilian role isn't the right one.
When you reach those moments, we want you to have people you can call who already know your story.
Because transition isn't a single event.
And neither is the support you may need along the way.
